Key West is known for its breathtaking views. From taking in illuminating displays during the holiday season to taking in the underwater world on a snorkeling tour, there’s no shortage of things to see above and below the surface. One of the most stunning spots on the island is the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, conveniently located only a few blocks from Cabana Inn. During your stay at our adults-only hotel, make the short walk to explore the popular attractions.

How the Conservatory Got Its Start

The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is the brainchild of Sam Trophia. Trophia raised Monarchs in Upstate New York, and he also collaborated on a research project that looked at the migration patterns of these creatures. His love and passion for butterflies led to the creation of the Butterfly Gallery in 1992. After some years, this attraction was expanded to become what it is today.

What to Know about Visiting

We recommend purchasing your tickets online before you arrive. The attraction is open daily, but it may close early on certain holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

During your visit, there are numerous things to explore that teach you all about butterflies.

  • Watch a 15-minute film that tells you about a butterfly’s life cycle and interesting facts.
  • Take your time walking around the Learning Center, which features a wall-size mural map showcasing butterfly identification by country of origin.
  • See live caterpillars feeding.
  • Pop into the gift shop to find the perfect keepsake.
  • Purchase tickets to meet Rhett and Scarlett, the two resident flamingos.

Perhaps the biggest reason people visit the attraction is to walk among hundreds of butterflies and birds. The exotic environment is the perfect habitat for these creatures to thrive. There are roughly 50 to 60 species of butterflies as well as several species of birds that call the climate-controlled, glass-enclosed habitat home.
