What to Know about the Annual Key West Festival
Every April, the Key West Conch Republic Independence Celebration takes over the island. The republic was created in 1982 in response to the U.S. Border Patrol’s blockade of the Florida Keys. The 10-day celebration works to foster a sense of pride and unity among locals.
The festival opens on Friday with a beach cleanup in the morning before the opening ceremonies later that night. Head to Mallory Square for the light-hearted ceremony, which includes the CR Pledge of Allegiance and conch shell-horn salute. Afterward, head to Schooner Wharf Bar & Galley for the kick-off party and conch shell-blowing contest.

- Learning how rum is distilled on the Conch Crawl Bar Stroll, Rum Salute, and Distillery Tour through Old Town
